Wooden It Be Nice

Wood bowlsFor some reason, where ever I look these days, I see wooden dishes. It’s weird; sort of like when you learn a new word, then all of a sudden you hear that word all the time… Full disclosure: I had to look up tips on saying “wooden” dish, or “wood” dish. If my Google search is correct, “wooden” is an adjective, and “wood” is a noun. Therefore I’m going to say, “wooden dish” from now on.

The problem with the wooden dishes I’ve come across is they’re all dirty, scratched, and stained. They’ve been lying around overused, then unappreciated. I just know their original beauty lies beneath the wear and tear.

I could easily paint them, but I’m tired of paint, and I want to see the wood, not cover it up. So, sanding it is! Unfortunately, because of the curves of the dishes, I have to sand them by hand. I’m sure there’s a fancy sander out there for just this project, but I don’t have one in my studio.

I used a combination of 80 grit sandpaper, then sanding sponges, and finally fine grit sandpaper for a smooth finish. This process takes a lot of elbow grease and patience, because when you think you’re done, there’s usually one more spot left to finish. Once down to the bare wood, I simply rubbed in some woodblock oil. (It’s important to choose an oil suitable for food incase someone wants to eat nuts or berries from these dishes).

As I was sanding, I started thinking of other repurposely ideas. Even though I’m tired of paint, I think it would be cool to paint just the underside, and create a more colorful, modern vibe. Or, perhaps add a decorative detail like decoupage, and use as an accessory dish on your vanity. You’ll just have to follow me on Facebook to see what happens to the rest of the dishes.
