Survivors

he woman who sold me these chairs said they were the only furniture of hers that survived the Oakland Hills fire of ’91. The seats had been burned away, and the wrought iron had rusted. She didn’t have a use for them anymore, and was happy to pass them along. So, I went to work with a wire brush to clean the iron, but was careful to preserve the patina. Once I had the desired look, I protected it with a couple coats of clear Rustoleum. Then, I cut some new seat forms from plywood, and covered them with foam cushion and durable vinyl. My cat, Kira, seems to like these beautiful survivors.
